From mythology to mask making, improvisation to imagination, pantomime to production, drama at Bryn Mawr offers education in the classics as well as opportunities to create original works for the stage.
The study of drama begins in earnest in the Middle School as students are introduced to the skills of performance and presentation. Creative dramatics, the art of pantomime, and physical theatrical techniques build confidence and strength for performance, while ensemble and improvisation skills are honed through the exploration of folktales and myths. Drama in the Middle School includes a production at each grade level. Mythology and classical drama, acting techniques, and mask making set the stage for many student-written plays.
Drama thrives in the Upper School with courses in film, acting, and stagecraft. Students with no experience as well as those with much experience are well served by the program. There are two major productions with Gilman each year, one at Gilman and one at Bryn Mawr. Other opportunities include productions at Boys' Latin and Loyola Blakefield, classes in acting at Gilman and Bryn Mawr, and annual student-directed productions. Stage Club provides a learning experience for girls interested in technical theater, and every production showcases student achievements in lighting, sound, costumes, and all aspects of design and set construction.
