Making Schools Safe
On Tuesday, February 8, 2011, The Bryn Mawr School hosted the annual “Making Schools Safe” workshop sponsored by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS). This year’s workshop focused on the “Critical Role of Families in Wellness, Prevention, and Care for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) Youth” led by Dr. Caitlin Ryan. more...
Broadus Award Winner

Congratulations to Lower School teacher and reading specialist Hunter Hanley, the 2011 recipient of the Broadus Award at The Bryn Mawr School. The award was presented to Ms. Hanley on Friday, February 18, following a special faculty and staff breakfast at the school. The Lucy Eastwood Broadus Memorial Fund was established at Bryn Mawr in 1984 to honor the life of Mrs. Lucy Eastwood Broadus, who studied in Paris in 1926-27. more...

Crochet Coral Reef Project

Recently, the Crochet Coral Reef Project was featured in the Baltimore Examiner newspaper, but we wanted to bring readers of the Bryn Mawr eNews an update. The Middle School Crochet Coral Reef mini display has been installed in two cases in Centennial Hall Lobby, and it includes about 100 crochet pieces from 12 students, 3 teachers, and 4 friends of Bryn Mawr. The display incorporates text that was written by 7th-grade students who were researching coral reefs for their SWI projects. more...
Going Ballistic

Middle School science teachers Kate Brendler and Ken Schopf advise the popular Backyard Ballistics Club in the Middle School at Bryn Mawr. The club has a dozen students from grades 6 – 8 as members, and it meets on a regular basis throughout the school year to study the dynamics of projectiles, their motion, and effects. more...

When it comes to advocating for creatures of the sea, senior Katie Del Guercio is not afraid to wade in deep and swim with the sharks in her AP environmental science class with Ms. Kircher. more...
Tower of Power
The Middle School Math Department and math students participated, once again, this year in the Johns Hopkins University-sponsored “Tower of Power” contest. In celebration of National Engineering Week in February, the university issues a challenge to middle school students from area schools to construct towers using only raw spaghetti noodles and marshmallows. more...
Buoyancy Challenge

In January, Bryn Mawr sixth-grade students embarked on a bold voyage with their 2011 buoyancy challenge project. The students were called upon to be maritime engineers, and their charge was to build a sea-worthy vessel that could transport several thousand golf balls to various ports around the globe. more...
The Year of the Rabbit

Bryn Mawr fourth-grade girls recently enjoyed a day of celebrating the Chinese New Year by learning the ancient art of creating Chinese letters and characters, practicing their skill with chopsticks, imitating the fluid movements of Tai Chi, and creating special new year-inspired crafts. more...
Cover Story

Mrs. Letras’ Graphic Design class is most famous for its book cover design assignment. Each year, students in the class study book cover design and discuss ways to create an effective book cover before designing their own. The first part of the assignment asks the students to consider both a “title emphasis” cover and an “author emphasis” cover and to create one of each for their chosen books. more...

On Monday, February 14, 2011, Director of Arts Michael Robinson recorded a Bryn Mawr testimonial for Maryland’s local public radio station, WYPR- 88.1 FM. The radio spot will begin airing on WYPR toward the end of February and will run during the important weeks when admitted students’ families will be considering The Bryn Mawr School for their daughters’ educations. more...

Congratulations to Carlie Hruban ’13, Emma Koramshahi ’12, and Kaitlin Miller ’11whose artwork was exhibited in the Young Artists Showcase during the month of February. Cecilia’s family owns and operates Coffee Coffee in Harford County, and Cecilia noticed that the business could be more sustainable and environmentally responsible by taking just a few small steps. more...
Empty Bowls
On Thursday, February 17, Bryn Mawr hosted its annual Empty Bowls fundraiser to help raise funds in support of Our Daily Bread. For a modest contribution, beautiful ceramic bowls created by the students were provided to guests so that they could enjoy a homemade supper of soup, salad, and bread prepared and served by the students. more...
