A Note From Sue : Falling Back

It’s that time of year again when I look up from my desk at 4:45 and the sun is already down behind the trees. We have been so lucky this fall with weeks of beautiful weather, but as the days grow shorter and the temperatures start to fall just in time for our Thanksgiving break, I think we all knew it couldn’t last forever. “To everything there is a season.”

Our theme for the year is Come, Let us Gather! and no time of the year provides more opportunity to do so than the winter holidays. Thanksgiving has always been a favorite gathering of mine because at the center of the action is spending time with those we love and giving thanks for our many blessings.  The Bryn Mawr community is certainly high on my list of reasons for gratitude.

Each day I am fortunate to see the Bryn Mawr mission in action. Whether it’s silly fun like our Halloween costume parade, serious efforts to help others like the Upper School service Saturday, or the sisterhood of Girls’ Night Out, watching our students enjoy the benefits of this strong community makes me hopeful and grateful. These kids WILL change the world for the better.

Behind the scenes, encouraging girls to find their best selves, is a whole cadre of wonderful people who ask our students to stretch and grow, to dig deep and strengthen their character, knowledge and skills.  Each day I witness learning unfolding right in front of me thanks to the guidance of our terrific teachers, coaches and staff. My gratitude to our dedicated and capable faculty overflows.

Our partnership with families around the values we share allows us to go far beyond the content of the curriculum to offer girls “considered and consequential” experiences, cultivating a climate of creativity and joy in learning.  We send these girls out into the world ready to dwell in its possibility, as Emily Dickinson would say.

In our wonderful faculty and staff’s care, our students reach for the stars on a daily basis. With encouragement and mentorship, students explore their potential and make remarkable strides.  As important as their achievements, their mistakes are welcomed, all part of who they are and who they will become. I am grateful for all of this.

Wishing you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a great holiday season.

"I dwell in Possibility"

I dwell in Possibility –
A fairer House than Prose –
More numerous of Windows –
Superior – for Doors –

Of Chambers as the Cedars –
Impregnable of eye –
And for an everlasting Roof
The Gambrels of the Sky –

Of Visitors – the fairest –
For Occupation – This –
The spreading wide my narrow Hands
To gather Paradise –
