What is it like returning your alma mater as a teacher?
As a student, I don’t think I realized how the principles upon which the school was founded really underpin everything that we do, but now I see that. From an academic perspective, Bryn Mawr has always been the gold standard to me for the really authentic literary conversation, so I feel lucky to be a part of that. Finally, I love the bond that I feel with the girls because of my own identity as a Bryn Mawr girl.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I’m really committed to a shared spirit of inquiry. One of the privileges of teaching here is that I get to teach all of my classes around a Harkness table. This breaks the model of the teacher at the front of the room and the students sitting in rows. Instead, students and teachers sit down together, and ask and answer questions together. That is really important to me.
How do you view the role of technology in the classroom?
Technology is a fundamental tool, but as a school, we must figure out how to use technology to make meaning, instead of letting it distract from the work we are doing in the classroom. It is our job to teach students to use these tools effectively and meaningfully.
