What do you like the most about teaching at Bryn Mawr?
The people, the students, the entire community. It feels like people here really care about one another. The faculty is here because they want to be here—they want to make the students’ lives better and the community better. I have a young child who goes to Bryn Mawr [in the Little School] now, and I feel even more reassured that this is where I want my daughter to be. I know that they are going to push her, in a good way, and they do it because they care and because they want her to do the best that she can. I also like the diversity of the student body, and the diversity of the faculty. I think that Bryn Mawr does a good job with emphasizing life beyond the school. I am always amazed by the students’ ability to think beyond Baltimore and to see the bigger picture.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that everybody has an ability, and what I strive for is to make students comfortable and to help them understand that it is OK not to be good at everything; they just have to be willing to work hard. Through that learning process, they will get better at something, and discover what they like to do, or what they don’t like to do.
