Emily Tankersley, Upper School Dance
"I like the fact that, as a community, we have an appreciation for dance. In that capacity, my philosophy is about exposure to dance, without the expectation that we are creating a school of dancers."
What do you like the most about teaching at Bryn Mawr?
I really like the balance of being in both the Physical Education and Arts Departments, and of course the students are just amazing. I have been dancing since I was 12, so it is wonderful to be able to teach something I love.
What is your teaching philosophy?
At Bryn Mawr, everybody dances, and I like the fact that, as a community, we have an appreciation for dance. In that capacity, my philosophy is about exposure to dance, without the expectation that we are creating a school of dancers. When it comes to Dance Company, my philosophy is that it is an opportunity for them to grow, both as dancers and as artists. I do believe that dance education is not just about the performance aspect. I want to meet students where they are, and then encourage them to push beyond their comfort zone.
What has it been like being part of Gym Drill for so many years?
When I first came and watched Gym Drill, I was a little bit scared of how I was going to do it all. But every year the girls really pull together, and although Gym Drill is about the cultural dances, it is also about class bonding. It is a really special, unique day.
