Squash and Swimming IAAM A Conference Champions

This winter, Mawrtian Nation brought home two IAAM A Conference championship titles.  Varsity squash won their second consecutive championship and the swim team broke both school and IAAM records when they dominated the championship meet.

Swimming was led by eight seniors, four of whom are committed to competing for Division I college programs next year. The Mawrtians became the first team in IAAM history to place first in all eleven events.  They set school records in the 200 meter free relay, 500 meter freestyle and 200 meter freestyle. Caitlin Hurley ’23 also set an IAAM record for her performance in the 500 meter freestyle.

Coach Matt Hetrick P’23 said “We had an amazing season through the effort and hard work of all 28 swimmers. We went undefeated in the regular season and won the first A Conference swimming championship in school history.”

Logan Betkey ’23, Maggie Belbot ’23, Grace Black ’23, Caitlin Hurley ’23, Mabel Koff ’24 and Blair Wehman ’25 were named to the IAAM A All Conference team.  Hurley was also named the Baltimore Sun’s Athlete of the Week.

Squash went 9-0 in conference play, winning the A Conference title and are heading to Nationals in Philadelphia.  Coach Kate Brendler said, “we are looking for contributions from all of our players,” to advance in nationals, where the team finished 13th last year.  Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming tournament, she said, “the spirit of this team is cohesive, energetic and positive.  They had lots of fun this season, they didn’t just play to win, they played to have fun.”

Three squash members were named to the IAAM all conference team, Maya Reedich ’23, Sabina Sitwat ’24 and Aisha Tarar ’24.

Molly Wolf ’12, assistant director of athletics, said “the dedication of our athletes shows through in their high level of competition, especially during the squash and swimming championships.  We are over the moon proud of our athletes for all their hard work and their coaches for guiding them through such incredible seasons.”
