Virtual Visits with Guest Author Dr. Mir - Leadership in Action

The Lower School hosted virtual visits from guest author Dr. Saira Mir as a part of the Leadership in Action Speaker Series on the theme of ethics and inclusivity.

Dr. Mir is the author of Muslim Girls Rise: Inspirational Champions of Our Time, a non-fiction illustrated childrens’ book about contemporary Muslim girls and women and their contributions to the world. Her virtual visits with each Lower School grade throughout the day included stories, conversations and time to answer student questions.

The book is a series of short biographies including well-known figures such as Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, politician Ilhan Omar and activist Malala Yousafzai, as well as lesser-known women like writer G. Willow Wilson and chef Amanda Saab.

Dr. Eric Elton, Bryn Mawr’s director of community engagement, said, “Dr. Saira Mir touches on all of the Leadership in Action program’s core values in the stories she shares: compassion, courage, collaboration, responsibility, and ingenuity. Along with sharing her journey, Dr. Mir will also help to empower self-discovery in our students by helping them explore their own identity and learn a variety of ways one can be a leader in the world.”

One of the reasons Dr. Mir decided to write Muslim Girls Rise was so that her own daughter could see herself represented in children’s books.  She wants her readers to think “she’s like me,” which drove her to include more contemporary women.

After reading some of the biographies in the book, Dr. Mir answered student questions and encouraged students to respond to negative things by making something positive.
