Read On: 2022 Summer Reading at Bryn Mawr
Bryn Mawr’s Summer Reading program provides enriching, engaging selections for different reading types and tastes. In addition to keeping students sharp and preparing them for fall class discussions, we hope students connect through common reading experiences and develop a lifelong love of reading. Requirements vary by age and reading level.
Lower School
Summer Reading requirements begin when students are entering second grade. Students are asked to log a minimum of three books over the summer months, including poetry, chapter books, audio and picture books! Read the 2nd-5th grade list of suggestions.
Middle School
In Middle School, 6th grade students read any three books of their own choosing and answer a common set of questions. 7th graders read three required novels, while all 8th grade students read The Outsiders plus two additional titles from a provided list. This summer, Middle School students are raising money for the Govans Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library by keeping a reading log. For any book completed in addition to the required books, $1 will be donated to the Friends of Govans Library.
Upper School
Depending on their courses, Upper School students have a range of options and requirements!
See the full Upper School Required Reading list. Additionally, students select one book from the
Upper School Student-Nominated Summer Reading list and attend group discussions on their chosen title in the fall.
Employees
Bryn Mawr employees also have Summer Reading assignments! Click here for a list of selections curated by the Professional Development Committee. Everyone participates in follow-up discussions before school begins in August. Faculty are also reading Unconscious Bias in Schools: A Developmental Approach to Exploring Race and Racism to continue community conversations centered on diversity, equity and inclusion.
