Bryn Mawr Athletics Launches “Person Before Player”
With prominent athletes—from Simone Biles to Naomi Osaka—recently opening up about their struggles with anxiety and burnout, as well as the increased need for attention to mental health at the collegiate level, the mental health of athletes has been in the national spotlight, at all levels.
To help empower Bryn Mawr’s student-athletes to perform at their best both physically and emotionally, the school is launching a new partnership with the MINDset Center to offer the Person Before Player program.
Throughout the academic year, psychologist Dr. Shreya Hessler and psychotherapist Casey Kutner, M.A., will meet directly with Bryn Mawr students, parents/caregivers and coaches to empower Mawrtian athletes to be healthy and resilient in and outside of the game. The sessions focus on awareness of the climate and culture of athletic programs, knowledge of how to identify common signs of mental distress in student-athletes, and skills and strategies to address any issues.
“A healthy athlete is a person before they are a player,” said Tina Veprek, Director of Athletics. “Their performance is only enhanced when they are able to fully incorporate and make space for their well-being.”
