Bryn Mawr Visits Morgan State
On December 8, Bryn Mawr Middle Schoolers visited Morgan State University to see their lab facilities and learn more about engineering. Upon our arrival, engineering students introduced themselves by telling us their major and why they chose engineering as a career. The students we met were social engineers, industrial engineers, and civil engineers. Morgan State University has many engineering labs and we had the opportunity to visit two of them. The first lab we visited was the Environmental Lab, in which we learned the process engineers use to analyze organic and inorganic material. The engineer briefly told us about another lab where they use a machine to test a structure’s ability to withstand an earthquake.
After our tour, we started on our engineering challenge, which was to use 10 zip ties, a trash bag, a plastic tablecloth, two cardboard baseboards, 10 pieces of sharpened bamboo sticks, scissors, one roll of tape and 10 rubber bands to build a shelter that could fit a family of one to four. We also had to advertise our shelter while the judges watched closely and took notes to decide the winner. The first, second, and third places were determined by the skills used to build, design, and present the tent. Although we did not win, we still helped Morgan State accomplish their task of creating interest in engineering among kids.
