MLK Celebrations

In mid-January, Bryn Mawr celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the Lower and Middle Schools, students teamed up for a cross-divisional reading project that highlighted different stories about civil rights and diversity. Middle School students worked with Lower School Librarian Lydia Mason to choose appropriate stories for the different Lower School grades, then read the books to the younger girls and led discussions. In the Upper School, students heard from three alumnae, who reflected on Dr. King's life and accomplishments and their own career paths as women of color. Upper School Play: Our Town

In February, the Upper School presented the Thornton Wilder classic, "Our Town." Described by Edward Albee as "...the greatest American play ever written," the story follows the people of Grover's Corners through three acts: "Daily Life," "Love and Marriage," and "Death and Eternity." Narrated by stage managers and performed with minimal props and sets, audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually — in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre — die. Bryn Mawr's student-led adaptation incorporated original multimedia work by junior Sage Okolo with help from eighth grader Naomi Fotenos. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew on a very successful show!

Winter Sports

Winter sports wrapped up in February, amid temperatures that felt more appropriate for spring sports. Highlights of the season included a new school record in the 4x800 relay for the indoor track team, a trip to the semi-finals for the varsity basketball team, an undefeated season for JV squash, a strong showing at the U.S. Squash National Tournament for varsity squash, and a second-place finish in the IAAM "B" League Championship for swimming, among other accomplishments. Congratulations to all 134 of our winter athletes!

Empty Bowls Dinner

The annual Empty Bowls dinner took place on February 16. This student-led fundraiser for food pantry Our Daily Bread invites guests to partake in a simple meal of bread, soup and salad, and to take home a handmade ceramic bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls there are in the world. Special thanks to student organizers Serena Thaw-Poon '18,  Fudi Fickenscher '19, Yerin Kim '18, Taylor Reed '18, and Jordan Brice '18, and to all of those who came for the event!
