Congratulations to seniors Mina Park, Hannah Sawa and Sage Okolo, who have been named regional winners of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, joining a network of alumni that include some of the nation’s most accomplished creative leaders including artist Andy Warhol, writer Sylvia Plath and fashion designer Zac Posen.
The awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, whose mission is to “identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world.” Through the awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Students from across the country submitted nearly 350,000 original works this year in 29 different categories of art and writing.
Sawa received a Gold Key for her poem,
Tag, You’re In. This is the first poem she wrote for the poetry unit of her Bryn Mawr creative writing elective. Sawa’s poem explores the journey of a young girl in the Bronx who is trying to join a group of kids by spray painting a wall, and the experiences she faces afterward. The poem will move on to the national competition.
