Bryn Mawr Welcomes Best-Selling Author

Special thanks to our parent Wellness Committee members, pictured above, for helping to bring New York Times best-selling author Nancy Jo Sales (center) to campus in October for an important discussion about teen girls and social media. Sales' 2016 bestseller, "American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers," has received widespread media coverage with interviews on NPR, Good Morning America, Nightline, CBS News, The New York Post and Teen Vogue. While at Bryn Mawr, Sales also spoke with Middle and Upper School girls about social media use and its effect on their health and wellbeing.

Space Dedicated in Innovation Lab

Thanks to a generous gift from the Sheridan Foundation, the Critique Space in the Innovation Lab was recently dedicated in memory of L. Patrick Deering, a former Bryn Mawr and Sheridan Foundation trustee and the father of Bryn Mawr alumnae Lawrie Deering '69 and Kate Deering-Grieves '78. The Critique Space (also called the Idea Space) is one of three spaces in the Innovation Lab. It is a completely flexible space, with furniture on wheels and plenty of brainstorming surfaces. Here, girls have the space to tinker and develop their designs in preparation for building and refinement.

She is the active president of the board of 606 Office Condo Building, and has recently accepted the role of treasurer of the Hampton Improvement Association. Emily and her husband Brian reside in Towson with their two girls, Riley '21 and Grace '23.

Julie R. Rubin '91 (top right) was elected as a term trustee. Julie previously served for eight years on the board, and is the immediate past board chair. She first joined the board when she became president of the Alumnae Association in 2006 and went on to serve in several different capacities. Julie is an associate judge of the Baltimore City Circuit Court, 8th Judicial Circuit; previously she was a partner at Astrachan Gunst Thomas Rubin.

Ellen Smith Dew '01 (bottom left) is the president of the Alumnae Association and will serve a two-year term. Henry Thomas (bottom right) was elected as a term trustee. He previously served in this roll from 2002-2009, and for five years during this tenure chaired the Development Committee. Under Henry’s leadership, the school’s Annual Fund increased from $1.17 to $1.4 million. Henry is a principal at Cornerstone Financial, LLP, an insurance and employee benefits business, and is the father of three Bryn Mawr alumnae: Victoria '04, Rebecca '06, and Annie '09.

We Need Your Support!

As we approach the season of thanks and giving, we invite you to demonstrate your commitment to Bryn Mawr with a donation to the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund is a critical pool of unrestricted funds that supports students and teachers – the heart of Bryn Mawr’s mission. It is the very best way to maintain Bryn Mawr’s standards of excellence and ensure the school’s ability to provide young women with an exceptional foundation for a remarkable life.

The goal is to raise $1,390,000 for the Annual Fund this year, and your support is critical to our ability to meet and exceed our goal. As you come together with loved ones for this season of giving, I hope you will participate and show your loyalty to Bryn Mawr with a contribution. Your generosity ensures Bryn Mawr’s ability to educate girls that are academically engaged, inquisitive and confident. Every gift matters, every gift is appreciated and every gift gets us closer to the goal of $1,390,000.

You may make a tax-deductible gift by cash, check, credit card, or in the form of appreciated securities. Click here to donate online. In order to take advantage of a tax deduction in 2016, your contribution must be postmarked by December 31, 2016. Gifts made by December 31 provide maximum benefit to the girls and overall academic programs.
