Mayo Shattuck P'21 has given a seven-figure gift through his foundation to The Bryn Mawr School. The remarkable gift will bolster the school’s financial aid program and its construction of a new Student Center, both part of the This is Our Way campaign to support Bryn Mawr’s strategic plan, The Bryn Mawr Way: A Contemporary Vision for What Girls Need to Thrive
Mayo Shattuck is Chairman of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation and has longstanding ties with Bryn Mawr as a parent and former member of the Board of Trustees.
Shattuck calls Bryn Mawr “one of Baltimore’s great institutions,” providing an incredible education to young women. “It’s a nurturing school and empowers girls to be exceptionally resilient,” he said. “Bryn Mawr is building strong girls to become strong women.”
Over the years, the Shattuck family has endowed scholarships, internship programs, and other initiatives to improve access and diversity at both public and private educational institutions, including University of Maryland Baltimore County, Simmons College, Stanford University, and Williams College, among others. Shattuck says his philanthropy serves a dual purpose—to help students gain access to great schools and to help the institutions to create a more diverse and worldly student body. “It's been a rewarding feeling to be able to help these kids and to see the progress that each of the institutions has made,” Shattuck said.
Bryn Mawr Head of School Sue Sadler said, “The Shattuck family’s generous gift will help us deliver on Bryn Mawr’s founding mission to provide girls with an exceptional education and give students the knowledge, tools, and skills they need to thrive in a contemporary world. We are deeply grateful to Mayo Shattuck and his children for their generosity and belief in Bryn Mawr as we invest in spaces and programs that help our students, faculty, parents, alumnae, and community feel connected to one another.”
The Shattuck family’s philanthropic support was critical in The Bryn Mawr School Board of Trustees’ decision to move forward with the Student Center construction. Shattuck says he is pleased to be a trailblazer on this project. “I do like to be a catalyst to help organizations achieve something significant,” he said. “I think there’s leverage and momentum in setting a standard in fundraising and inspiring people to reach a little further.”
